A recent E-Survey of nearly 8000 commuters conducted by CJI/Transit Marketing in the Olympia, Washington area found a distinctly higher rate of alternate mode usage among emplpuees at worksites with mandated or voluntary Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) Programs.

  • Mandated CTR Program: 29% of respondents used aa commute mode other than the single occupant vehicle (SOV).  These included bus, carpool, vanpool, biking or walking.
  • Voluntary CTR Program: 18% used an alternate mode.
  • No CTR Program: 11% used an alternate mode.

CTR programs are often challenged to demonstrate success.  However this extensive survey, sponsored by Intercity Transit and The Thurston Regional Planning Council provides clear evidence that employer efforts to encourage workers to use non-SOV commute modes are effective.
